Regarding: Home Care Authorizations for People with Disabilities
To: Jim Miller, CEO Renown Health
Monday, January 29, 2007

Dear Mr. Jim Miller,

I presume that you know from Teresa Schumacher and Mr. Klepin's letter, they have refused to allow the service required to authorize my care at home, (as allowed by law in NRS 629.091. These authorizations are vital for some of us to live in our communities, especially those of us with profound disabilities. I'm again approaching you, seeking your honest response.

I understand why you may have delegated this decision but, you may not be aware of the consequences of your decision. As a result, I could not secure home care and ended up at Renown Medical Center. I've now been hospitalized for almost 3 months.

This inappropriate hospitalization should have been prevented. It has been a burden upon hospital staff. It has wasted thousands of dollars and caused real personal harm. If the problem isn't resolved, are you willing to permit this foolishness to repeat?

I'm publishing this note because no one has been willing to take action or answer questions like I asked in my first letter to you and because I've been unable to receive your personal response. I'm persisting because of the gravity of my situation and because I have some hope that Renown Health will be true to its mission. With no established provision for this much-needed service, I'm looking to you to take the steps to make it happen.

In Mr. klepin's refusal to provide home care authorizations for me, he stated that I had other alternatives. This assertion is unfair and based on incomplete information. Those so-called alternatives were impossible to use or had a severe penalty associated. If I had managed to utilize either of Medicaid's suggested alternatives, doing so would have made my home care practically unworkable. Eventually, that would mean institutionalization for some of us who need these home care services to survive in the community.

Again, please take a stand and help maintain our home care services. You will be helping the disability community and the community at large. Let's "make a genuine difference" Please allow Renown Home Care Services staff to assist with these simple authorizations.

Sincerely,

Rick Cline, still at the hospital 982-7271. E-Mail: HomeCare@RenownHealth.info
